Forest Restoration
For the first time, traditional adversaries are coming together in order to find common ground related to improving forest health on the Salmon-Challis National Forest, including stakeholders from as far away as Boise and Missoula. Environmental groups and loggers agree on at least one thing – current forest conditions need some work. Instead of meeting in court, interested parties have been meeting in the forest to find common ground. Salmon Valley Stewardship coordinates and facilitates the Lemhi County Forest Restoration Group. Members have pledged to work together on projects that restore forest health while providing an economic benefit to nearby communities.

This group has been engaged in joint learning, as they work to put together landscape scale restoration projects for a national forest that covers several counties in central Idaho. Although the group is in its very early stages, the bridges that have been built between groups with often competing interests have impressed even the most veteran collaborators.
Salmon Valley Stewardship is guiding the Lemhi County Forest Group to connect hazardous fuels reduction activities with post and pole manufacturers; noxious weed abatement projects with goat herders; salmon and steelhead habitat improvement with local fishing guides.
