Our 15 year Report

Last week we had a fun opportunity to help make the connection between learning and doing with field trips to the kitchen for the Fernwaters 4th-7th grades. Some of the classes had a school project to design a food truck, so we got to show them a great example from the real world - our Community Kitchen. They toured the food trailer and walk-in cooler, and practiced their chef skills by making the class grilled cheese and icy lemonade. They really enjoyed the experience, and were excited to think about opportunities to have cooking classes or events using the kitchen. Critical thinking was definitely at play, learning how many sandwiches to cook at once before loosing track of which needs flipped - a few came out a little on the crunchy side but most were perfect!

Registration is now open for our summer day camp running from 9 am to 12 pm on Tuesdays in July and August. These programs are geared towards kids ages 7-10. We'll have a variety of hands-on natural resource activities and explore various outdoor places around town.

For the past three years we have benefited from a partnership with BIHO park rangers who come to Salmon and share their knowledge with local youth as part of the Expedition in a Day field trip series. If you or someone you know is skilled at program development and talking with diverse audiences, and interested in an exciting summer job across the Continental Divide near Wisdom, MT, apply for this awesome seasonal interpretive park ranger role!

Our friends at @bigholenps are hiring! For the past three years we have benefited from a partnership with BIHO park rangers who come to Salmon and share their knowledge with local youth as part of the Expedition in a Day field trip series. If you or someone you know is skilled at program development and talking with diverse audiences, and interested in an exciting summer job across the Continental Divide near Wisdom, MT, apply for this awesome seasonal interpretive park ranger role!

On Monday Salmon High School students explored the Lemhi River and connected with local people dedicated to protecting, restoring, and managing this special watershed.

Salmon Valley Stewardship, with support from the Trout Unlimited River of No Return Chapter and other partners, coordinated field sites and guest speakers focused on history, land use, and river restoration. Students visited projects in different stages of completion and learned about the challenges and benefits of restoration work.

The day began at Indian Springs (The Playground) near the Lemhi store, where Agaidika Shoshone tribal member Leo Ariwite shared stories from his childhood of playing here while his mother and aunties tended the salmon weir. Along with many other stories, he shared the cultural importance of the Lemhi River and traditional subsistence practices of his people. This site also features a restoration project, led by Trout Unlimited, reconnecting Indian Springs with the Lemhi. Matt Green of Rio Engineering showed the students around the site, outlining the importance of and challenges involved in restoration work.

At the next stop near the confluence of Hayden Creek and the Lemhi, students toured another Trout Unlimited project with Sean Bascom and watched new stream channels being excavated. TU’s Cassi Wood then guided students in designing their own restoration sites using features like pools, riffles, sinuosity, and log jams.

The final stop was a restoration project on local rancher Cecil Jackson’s property on the lower Lemhi. Led by Justin Saydell OSC and Steve Fisher of the Lemhi Soil and Water Conservation District, students saw how quickly wildlife has returned to the restored habitat, including frogs, insects, beavers, waterfowl, deer, and young fish. The tour concluded at a diversion and fish screen, where John Loffredo from the Department of Water Resources explained how these tools help balance irrigation needs with fish conservation.

Thank you to all the local partners who made this day possible, especially the River of No Return Trout Unlimited Chapter for funding support. It was truly a community effort and a beautiful spring day on a very special river.

This week we tested the kitchen by cooking a lunch for staff and supporters. We used the kitchen trailer to prepare a local greens salad, quinoa, baked chicken and stir fry veggies. While we could still use some donations of supplies and equipment, we were delighted to confirm that the basic systems are working as intended! We are currently fundraising and seeking donations of supplies to outfit the kitchen. (see our wishlist below) An open house and soft launch is scheduled for May 29, with a celebration inviting the community to enjoy more great food and tour the kitchen that you are helping create.

These programs will be geared towards kids ages 7-10, and focus on a variety of place-based natural resource topics, potentially with some travel around town to learn at new sites. Congratulations to the Salmon High School Envirothon Team for their SECOND PLACE finish at the state competition in Challis this week! This year's theme was: Nonpoint Source Pollution: It Begins at Home. Our team creatively tapped into such a diversity of knowledge while presenting solutions to watershed-wide problems in front of a panel of judges who work in various water-related fields! From governmental/legislative solutions regulating clean water responsibility to the importance of crop/grazing rotation and riparian buffers, I could tell they not only learned a lot from presenters at the competitions, they also have amazing science and ag teachers at school and are paying attention to locally relevant problems. 🌱🚰💧

Thank you to all the educators and natural resource professionals who make this awesome competition happen each year! And special thanks to the Lemhi County Soil and Water Conservation District for sponsoring our team's travel to Challis. We can't wait to see what next year's competition brings! Our final introduction this week is Eli, who is our new Botany and Restoration Specialist!
I’m Eli Windy, and I’m excited to be joining Salmon Valley Stewardship as part of the native plants and restoration team. I’m a botanist and rare plant grower who has spent the past few years working across the West collecting native seeds and getting to know the landscapes they come from. That work quickly turned into a real passion for restoring healthy plant communities and supporting the lands and people connected to them. Along the way, I’ve worked with public land agencies and helped start a community garden and small seed-growing project. I love getting my hands in the soil, working with plants at every stage, and connecting people to the landscapes around them. I’m especially excited to be in the Salmon Valley, contributing to restoration work that supports such special ecosystems and working lands. I’m looking forward to meeting people, building connections, and contributing to the work that keeps this community and landscape strong.

In the Interpretive Center, students interpreted pictographs/petroglyphs with Ranger Mark from @bigholenps. Inside, Suzy spoke to students about archaeology and what we can learn about culture throughout time from historic items like toys, magazines, and even her grandma's button accordion! Becca from the U.S. Forest Service - Salmon-Challis National Forest explored the world of birds with students. Kate read aloud to students who were impressed with how much Sacajawea did to help the Expedition, including caring for the members when they fell ill, teaching them to set traps and gather foraged foods, and saved the journals when their canoe tipped over - all with a baby on her back! Sarah's sunflower ball making station was a huge hit, and Meg led a station about traditional tools to navigate and make maps. Overall it was a big day full of engaging activities exploring our local natural and cultural resources and a lovely conclusion to Year 3 of Expedition in a Day!

Likely another familiar face to some of you - say hi to Joe Stewart, our new Natural Resource Specialist.
Joe hails from Seattle, Washington and loves adventuring outside, hiking, gardening, and befriending every dog he meets. He originally moved to Salmon after college and has spent time working in natural resources with the Bureau of Land Management, U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, and @lemhilandtrust. Most recently, Joe spent four years as a project manager with Trout Unlimited where he planned and implemented fish habitat rehabilitation projects throughout the Upper Salmon River Basin. When not exploring the beautiful areas around Salmon, Joe is a professional competitive bagpiper and spends time traveling to competitions throughout the U.S., Canada, and the U.K.

Most recently, Joe spent four years as a project manager with Trout Unlimited where he planned and implemented fish habitat rehabilitation projects throughout the Upper Salmon River Basin. When not exploring the beautiful areas around Salmon, Joe is a professional competitive bagpiper and spends time traveling to competitions throughout the U.S., Canada, and the U.K.

Day 3 of Expedition in a Day was colder and a bit rainy for 5th graders from Pioneer and Fernwaters but we still had so much fun! Students rotated through 8 different stations, ranging from learning about fire ecology and sagebrush ecosystems with Hannah from the BLM/Wildland Fire Service, pretending to be the annoying mosquitos and gnats that bothered Expedition members (and viewing Owen's awesome bug collection), and creating their own petroglyphs with Ranger Mark from Big Hole National Battlefield. Students also went on a nature hike with Lin from the Sawtooth Interpretive and Historical Association (SIHA), made sunflower balls and tasted pemmican with Sarah from SVS, and read It's Her Story: Sacajawea, written by Randy'L Teton. We were impressed with students' knowledge about the Lewis and Clark Expedition and their strong artistic and reading skills!

Our Lewiston-based historians Laurie and Tom shared more of their knowledge about the Expedition's travel and medicine. It was another beautiful sunny spring day to spend learning outdoors. Shoutout to the parent, grandparent, and family chaperones who are supporting the teachers this week!

In 2020, Moose caught the “Botany Field Work Bug” where she worked as a field technician, assisting an University of Idaho Master’s student in creating a Floracopeia of the Selkirk Mountain Range. However, this is not where her love for plants started. She grew up in the Rocky Mountains of Colorado hiking extensively with her family. During these outings, her father, a geologist, shared his knowledge and love of the area's geology, but Moose always found herself chasing the wildflowers. While pursuing her studies in higher education in Cultural Anthropology, Moose soon discovered her passion for learning about the vast and amazing ways humans around the world have used plants through Ethnobotany and Medical Anthropology. This summer she is excited to deepen her knowledge and connection with the Salmon community and the surrounding area by working on the Ecological Monitoring Crew.

Yesterday Kate & Cameron traveled to Idaho Falls for the Idaho National Laboratory Community Open House. We were invited to attend because SVS was a recipient of INL's Community Grant last year, which boosted engagement at the Lemhi County Farmers Market through special events and helped us expand youth outdoor education opportunities. We enjoyed meeting Battelle Energy Alliance board members, Representative Rod Furniss, and learning about other regional organizations doing incredible community-centered work! Thank you to the INL engagement team for the invite!
