Hey Salmon Valley folks -- The @sacajaweacenter has lots of space available this year in the community garden. This is a great opportunity to be a part of a community of gardeners, have garden space and free irrigation, and access to tools and a compost pile. Cost is only $20 per bed per season (most beds are around 9ft x 3ft) and gardeners can set up an automatic watering timer, plant flowers, food, etc. and have a bounty of harvests throughout the season. There's even a small greenhouse you could set up for transplants this spring. Contact Suzy Avey at the Sacajawea Center to sign up or for more information. email: savey@sacajaweacenter.org

We are looking for a Crew Lead who can help coordinate with our agency partners on project needs and scheduling, and oversee the daily project work of our field crew to collect vegetation data. We are also looking to hire 2-3 Ecological Monitoring Technicians for the field crew, who will conduct field surveys, identify plants, and enter data. Projects the crew may work on include BLM AIM upland monitoring surveys, upland range and riparian monitoring, cheatgrass inventory surveys, and native seed collection with our Native Plants Restoration Program and Forest Service partners. Work is generally 4 10-hour days and project work is scheduled across the region, from areas near Leadore to up by North Fork, and down to the Pahsimeroi - this is a great summer gig to explore the Salmon-Challis area! Have you ever wondered how to prune your fruit trees for maximum fruit production, what to do when branches break or your trees get blight, or how and when to fertilize? Join 45 North Farm for this half day workshop to learn various pruning techniques and have your questions answered by Andy Roubik with Quality Tree Service. With over 30 years of experience, Andy will share his wealth of information and provide a hands-on experience so that you can better care for your trees. The cost for this half day class is $25. Yesterday we had the joy of taking Salmon Junior High 7th graders up to Chief Joseph Pass for our annual Hands on the Land field trip. The purpose of this trip is to introduce students to winter recreation in the form of snowshoeing and cross-country skiing as well as talk about snow science and safety. A HUGE thank you goes to our community volunteers who chaperoned students around the ski trails and contributed their time to help our community's youth experience new things. Thank you Joel, Marla, Betsy, John, Travis, Sarah, Frances, Peter, Emma, Becca, Sidney, and Jessica! Another huge shoutout to our partnership with the Salmon Field Office BLM and U.S. Forest Service - Salmon-Challis National Forest for continuing to support our outdoor education programming; from volunteer and guest educator support to funding the field trip bus costs, our federal partners invest in our efforts to connect people to the land!

On March 6th we are hosting an event for farmers and ranchers about resources available to better support pollinators in center pivot corners. "Pivots for Pollinators" will be a learning opportunity with presentations by the Forest Service, NRCS, and University of Idaho Extension as well as free starter sources of seeds to get more pollinator-friendly plants growing in these underutilized, often problematic areas.

We are looking forward to when the snow melts, flowers bloom, and we'll start seeing pollinators emerging and flying with the warmer temperatures - then we'll know spring has actually arrived!

If you know and love Williams Creek Summit Cross Country Ski trails (or want to get to know them!) consider joining us for a volunteer work day! On Saturday February 8th SVS and partners will be placing new signage at trail intersections, doing some light maintenance, and most importantly playing in the snow! We would love your helpful hands and joyful company!

We will meet at the Upper Wapiti Meadows Loop parking lot (the only pull off with a trail map) at 10 am. Parking here is limited so we would appreciate if groups carpooled. We will discuss safety and distribute signage and tools. Lunch will be provided, but bring skis/snowshoes, snacks, water bottles, and appropriate layers! If you need skis or snowshoes let us know in advance.

Matthew Molyneaux, Technical Specialist with Oregon Tilth, discusses the essential tools and practices needed to implement the Organic Wild Crop Harvest certification for the sustainable collection of wild crops, while ensuring they meet organic standards. Topics include an in-depth look at the Organic Systems Plan, as well as pre- and post-certification requirements such as harvest and sales record keeping.

This training was supported by the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) Transition to Organic Partnership Program (TOPP). TOPP is a program of the USDA Organic Transition Initiative and is administered by the USDA Agricultural Marketing Service (AMS) National Organic Program (NOP).
