Trails
Stewardship

Since 2012, Salmon Valley Stewardship has served as the primary facilitator of the Salmon-Challis Trails Group, formerly known as 2L Trails and Salmon Valley Trails Committee. The collaborative is made up of engaged local trail users, nonprofit groups, federal and state land management agencies, and city and county representatives. The group gathers every other month to discuss upcoming trails stewardship events and trail management and maintenance needs. By bringing diverse user groups to the table, the Salmon-Challis Trails Group has successfully facilitated securing large federal and state grants to fund trails projects and improved hundreds of miles of trails throughout the Salmon River Region.

Salmon-Challis Trails Group

Salmon Valley Stewardship is pleased to be part of the Salmon Area Trails effort. The committee’s Action Plan established several goals to work toward:

  • Provide safe access to public lands

  • Preserve and enhance recreational opportunities for motorized and non-motorized trail users

  • Preserve wildlife and riparian habitat along river corridors

  • Promote healthy lifestyles and increase enjoyment of life in the Salmon Valley (check out our Highway 93 South Trail update!)

  • Take an “inside-out” approach, putting local needs first

  • Preserve rural characteristics while enhancing economic vitality

  • Highlight local culture, customs, and history

Together for Trails

In addition to facilitating the Salmon-Challis Trails Group, SVS promotes recreational activities within the community like managing the "Friends of the Pathway" for the new 5-mile paved bike path along Highway 93 South, coordinates CDT Gateway Community events and Trail Work Days with regional partners like the Continental Divide Trail Coalition, and supports the local recreation economy through efforts like the development of a Wayfinding Plan for Salmon and Challis.
