Look at those smiles! Today we were grateful to get to partner with @@_idaho_adventures for the third year in a row to help us get 28 local 4th and 5th graders out on the Salmon River. Thanks to our community's incredible generosity this spring, we quickly raised the funds to cover this year's river float: to hire Idaho Adventures guides and provide lunch for participants after the float. These kiddos swam laps in the river, looked for frogs, cool rocks, and minnows, and some even tried rowing the raft! Thank you to Everett & Jaz and their crew of patient & skilled guides for helping us make this happen, our SVS lunch crew and chaperones, the BLM and Forest Service for behind the scenes support each year, and the parents & family members who sign their kids up for this float. They say it takes a village to raise a child, and we feel lucky to get to work with great folks to help provide this special recreation opportunity for kids here on our home river.

She's selling empanadas & other cuban-inspired food out of her food truck Wed-Sat at @thehubofsalmon. She's also grown into a full-on caterer for weddings and other special events. We're grateful to be working with her this summer - providing prep space in the commercial kitchen to other food businesses so the community can enjoy more locally made food.

Say hello to the new forestry technician with SVS crew, Lachlan. He was born and raised in Boise Idaho where his passion for outdoor recreation and protection has grown. He just completed his National EMT license and is hoping to assist the SVS organization in any way possible. He loves to do anything from skiing in winter to boating in the summer, and is very excited to be in Salmon and have the chance to adventure the rivers and expansive geology.

Meet one of our forestry techs, Alex!

I am Alex Coulston and I am very excited to be here as a forestry technician! I am from Phoenix, AZ with a Bachelor's degree in Environmental Design. I have most recently worked with Craters of the Moon National Preserve and Monument with native seed collecting. I learned how much I really appreciate the chance to give back to the land for which I feel we as a collective owe so much to. I feel as though I was born with this aspiration to protect the land and to show others the benefits we all reap by doing so. A saying that has stuck with me from assisting in disaster relief and recovery efforts after the fires in Hawaii was if "you malama aina, the aina will malama you." It translates to if you protect the land the land will protect you. Thank you to Salmon Valley Stewardship for having me here and I am excited to learn as well as see where this journey takes me in this gorgeous landscape.

We have an awesome lineup of folks from the University of Idaho, NRCS, and Regenerative Agriculture Network of Idaho joining us here in Salmon on Monday June 22nd and Tuesday June 23rd. This two-part program will start off with presentations and free dinner at the Salmon Grange on Monday evening, then we'll get out in the field on Tuesday morning to learn hands-on with soil health sampling and testing methods. Join us to learn knowledge about improving soil function, NRCS funding you could apply for, and how to become Trout-Safe certified. Come to one or both programs. Presentations will take place at the Salmon Grange on Monday, June 22nd. The workshop will continue with a field session up Carmen Creek on Tuesday, June 23rd.

She went on to receive a B.S. in Environmental Science from Emory University, and has since enjoyed diving into different areas of conservation including trail work, riparian restoration, agricultural best management practices, and now forestry. She is excited to explore Salmon and expand her understanding of Western ecologies. In her free time she loves to spend time with animals, trees, and/or bodies of water, and when indoors she enjoys reading and crafting.

The feedback the Tool Library consistently hears is that folks want more open hours in which they can pick up and drop off tools. Well, we are pleased to say that we are expanding our open hours for the summer! Big shout out to our volunteers who help make this possible.

Want to help a state-wide effort to monitor the majestic and migratory monarch butterfly? Idaho Department of Fish and Game and SVS are in need of volunteers in the Salmon area to adopt and monitor patches of the butterfly's only host plant, showy milkweed, in July and August. This citizen-science data is critical, and helping out is easy, fun and rewarding.

If you want to volunteer, visit the IDF&G Statewide Milkweed & Monarch Survey site to register, adopt sites, and access training videos. If you can, attend the June 2nd IDF&G evening webinar for a live version of the training (register to get the link). If you miss that one, all training material is available in pre-recorded videos at the site above.

If you're a Salmon-area volunteer, be sure to let Owen Baughman at SVS know by email (owenbaughman@salmonvalley.org) so we can keep you in the loop about an in-person training that SVS plans to host some evening in mid-late June.
