This summer we’ve been hosting a weekly summer day camp, with the theme of river to ridges. Each week we are focusing on a different ecosystem or habitat type, and exploring 3 animals of the week who live in that ecosystem. So far in July we’ve learned about river, riparian, sagebrush, and native plant ecology. Participants have visited SVS’s seed lab, searched for macroinvertebrates in the river, and acted out wildlife in games of charades. In August we’ll explore forest and montane & alpine ecosystems.

We've had a couple renters in the kitchen, and have lots of capacity for more renters, so spread the word that the space is available! Here are some ideas: Use the kitchen trailer to have a pop-up restaurant with takeout food, use the walk-in cooler to store ingredients, or host a small class in a professional space!

Our main renter at the moment is Lara Antonello with La Osera, who is expanding her food business this year in a big way. She's selling empanadas & other Cuban-inspired food out of her food truck Wed-Sat 4-8 pm at The Hub. She's also catering for weddings and other special events. Each year, we present the Krosting Award at our annual Harvest Fest celebration to a recipient who displays a strong commitment to Lemhi County’s economy, community, and the environment. This year's award recipient will be announced at Harvest Fest - September 18th at the Sacajawea Center!

In 2024, the Salmon Whitewater Park Association won the award for their years-long efforts to create the Guleke wave. Today the park is a destination to all in Salmon and the surrounding area. Whether you are surfing the wave, floating through the town stretch, or lounging on the river's edge, the town of Salmon has certainly added another jewel to our crown. For those visionary efforts, dedication and countless volunteer hours, these impassioned individuals created a lasting legacy benefitting our community, adding to our sustainability and economy for generations to come, all three elements pivotal to the spirit of this award.

The Native Plants Program has been busy all across Lemhi County scouting and collecting wild native seed. But we don't always have to travel far to find some of our most useful native plants. Do you know the bushy yellow plant in the photo? This versatile native survivor is curlycup gumweed (Grindelia squarrosa), and it's just starting to bloom all around the Valley.

Sometimes mistaken for noxious knapweeds or thistles, this native plant is best identified by the curly bracts covering the bottom of the super-sticky flower heads. We love this plant because it competes with undesirable roadside weeds like kochia and spotted knapweed, and pollinators love it too. The sticky resin has been used medicinally for thousands of years. Also, Idaho should be proud to call curlycup gumweed one of its star plants, because the NRCS Plant Material Center in Aberdeen will soon release the first-ever commercial variety of this species for habitat and pollinator conservation!

If you see curlycup along on your property, don't mow them down yet! Wail until they have dropped their seed in a few more weeks, so you can let it spread and let it help you battle weeds next year from the ground up! If you have a bunch of plants on your land and want to help SVS get seed, we can come collect it! Just drop Owen a line at owenbaughman@salmonvalley.org.

Look at those smiles! Today we were grateful to get to partner with @@_idaho_adventures for the third year in a row to help us get 28 local 4th and 5th graders out on the Salmon River. Thanks to our community's incredible generosity this spring, we quickly raised the funds to cover this year's river float: to hire Idaho Adventures guides and provide lunch for participants after the float. These kiddos swam laps in the river, looked for frogs, cool rocks, and minnows, and some even tried rowing the raft! Thank you to Everett & Jaz and their crew of patient & skilled guides for helping us make this happen, our SVS lunch crew and chaperones, the BLM and Forest Service for behind the scenes support each year, and the parents & family members who sign their kids up for this float. They say it takes a village to raise a child, and we feel lucky to get to work with great folks to help provide this special recreation opportunity for kids here on our home river.

He just completed his National EMT license and is hoping to assist the SVS organization in any way possible. He loves to do anything from skiing in winter to boating in the summer, and is very excited to be in Salmon and have the chance to adventure the rivers and expansive geology.

Meet one of our forestry techs, Alex!

I am Alex Coulston and I am very excited to be here as a forestry technician! I am from Phoenix, AZ with a Bachelor's degree in Environmental Design. I have most recently worked with Craters of the Moon National Preserve and Monument with native seed collecting. I learned how much I really appreciate the chance to give back to the land for which I feel we as a collective owe so much to. I feel as though I was born with this aspiration to protect the land and to show others the benefits we all reap by doing so. A saying that has stuck with me from assisting in disaster relief and recovery efforts after the fires in Hawaii was if "you malama aina, the aina will malama you." It translates to if you protect the land the land will protect you. Meet one of our forestry techs, Alex!

I am Alex Coulston and I am very excited to be here as a forestry technician! I am from Phoenix, AZ with a Bachelor's degree in Environmental Design. I have most recently worked with Craters of the Moon National Preserve and Monument with native seed collecting. I learned how much I really appreciate the chance to give back to the land for which I feel we as a collective owe so much to. I feel as though I was born with this aspiration to protect the land and to show others the benefits we all reap by doing so. Our FREE youth river float is coming up in a few weeks on July 9th. We have just three (3) spots left! This trip is exclusively for youth entering 4th or 5th grade this fall. We are primarily trying to reach kids who don't get the opportunity to float the river. Transportation, life jackets, snacks, and lunch at the park after the float are all provided. Calling all farmers, ranchers, and backyard gardeners looking to learn about soil health! We have an awesome lineup of folks from the University of Idaho, NRCS, and Regenerative Agriculture Network of Idaho joining us here in Salmon on Monday June 22nd and Tuesday June 23rd. This two-part program will start off with presentations and free dinner at the Salmon Grange on Monday evening, then we'll get out in the field on Tuesday morning to learn hands-on with soil health sampling and testing methods. Join us to learn knowledge about improving soil function, NRCS funding you could apply for, and how to become Trout-Safe certified. Come to one or both programs.
