The SVS Food Systems team held the third and final Seed School with @swiftriverfarmidaho this past Friday. Jessica and Jeremy of Swift River Farm went over the approaches to harvesting seed from a variety of crops including tomatoes, squash, peppers, carrots, onions, cucumbers and more. Participants gained great hands-on experience and were engaged in thoughtful discussions around growing for seed. The Seed School three-part workshop was supported through the Transition to Organics Partnership Program (TOPP). We have an incredible slate of TOPP workshops lined up for 2026, but before then, don't miss our next workshop on Saturday October 11th from 9 am - 12 pm at the @salmonschoolgarden all about low tunnels. As always, TOPP workshops are free to attend!

Thanks so much to all the folks who came to the Lemhi County Farmers Market 's Apple Pressing Party last weekend. We loved seeing the (literal truckloads) of apples and pears that people brought to be processed, and the last Farmers Market of the season was truly a super fun party. Bakers entered very creative apple pies and baked goods for the contest, and kids and adults alike enjoyed endless rounds of Tic-Tac-Toe and Tug of War. We had some mixed emotions from the vendors for the last day of the market - some said that they'll be happy to have their Saturdays free but will be sad to miss all the friends they see each weekend during market season. Hopefully this event will continue in future years to celebrate apple and harvest season!

Come on down to Veterans Memorial Park from 9 am to 1 pm on Saturday September 27th to celebrate the final market of the season. There is also an apple pie/apple baked goods contest so deliver your best apple treat at 11:30 am at the pavilion!

Each year, Salmon Valley Stewardship solicits nominations for a community leader who elevates the economy, environment, and community in Lemhi County - the sustainability triple bottom line. Past and present board members of the River of No Return Chapter of TU joined SVS Executive Director Maggie Seaberg around the stage to receive this honor at Thursday evening's Harvest Fest event. The RNRTU chapter is dedicated to community driven restoration, youth education, and salmon recovery in the Columbia Basin. Their flagship project, Homewaters Youth Camp, developed and coordinated in partnership with the @sacajaweacenter, is evidence of their commitment to educating the next generation of stewards in protecting, reconnecting, restoring and sustaining our coldwater resources and sharing the recreational, cultural and economic values of sound water, land and fisheries management. Thank you for your contributions to our Salmon (& salmon!) community, River of No Return Trout Unlimited board members past and present!

Campers tied their own fly fishing flies and learned to cast them with Bill and Jeff, made reed mats, baskets, and beaded necklaces with Miss Bobette, dug in the stream for macroinvertebrates with Julianne, designed their own restoration sites, tested water quality with John, dissected fish with IDFG, learned all about salmon and their miraculous life cycles and habitat needs from Meg, and SO much more!

This camp is truly a community effort and could not happen without the expert planning and coordination of Suzy and Steph at the Sacajawea Center, the fundraising and volunteer time of the Trout Unlimited River of No Return Chapter, and the amazing generosity and passion of natural resource professionals and tribal members. THANK YOU to all who helped out and all the parents and campers that made the week great!

The Forest Service had some Smokey swag and coloring books, while we had a variety of handouts for people to learn how to take preventative measures to reduce human-bear conflicts, free stickers, and a bear paw craft! Hi Everyone! If you're interested in getting outside and helping us improve our local landscapes, we'd love for you to join us in collecting seed from one of our most charismatic wildflowers, Bitterroot!

We will be meeting at the SVS office @ 5:40pm this Wednesday evening and heading out to Discovery Hill at 6pm. We will have snacks and beverages but please bring anything you need to be comfortable for a short evening of field work. We look forward to working with you!

Become a citizen scientist this summer! Help us monitor milkweed patches around Lemhi County and look for western monarch butterflies! We are hosting an in-person training this Friday, June 13th at 1 pm at the IDFG Conference Room. Meet at the main Wagonhammer Trailhead at 9 am. We'll provide the tools, project sites and activity options, and lunch. Bring a buddy, good walking shoes, a bike if you want to ride, water, work gloves if you've got 'em, and sun protection!
