Our final introduction this week is Eli, who is our new Botany and Restoration Specialist!
I’m Eli Windy, and I’m excited to be joining Salmon Valley Stewardship as part of the native plants and restoration team. I’m a botanist and rare plant grower who has spent the past few years working across the West collecting native seeds and getting to know the landscapes they come from. That work quickly turned into a real passion for restoring healthy plant communities and supporting the lands and people connected to them. Along the way, I’ve worked with public land agencies and helped start a community garden and small seed-growing project. I love getting my hands in the soil, working with plants at every stage, and connecting people to the landscapes around them. I’m especially excited to be in the Salmon Valley, contributing to restoration work that supports such special ecosystems and working lands. I’m looking forward to meeting people, building connections, and contributing to the work that keeps this community and landscape strong.

Today was the final day of Expedition in a Day with 4th graders from Pioneer and Fernwaters. The sun was shining on this morning's first solo hike led by Lin, which encouraged participants to reflect and use their senses while walking slowly and quietly. In the Interpretive Center, students interpreted pictographs/petroglyphs with Ranger Mark from @bigholenps. Inside, Suzy spoke to students about archaeology and what we can learn about culture throughout time from historic items like toys, magazines, and even her grandma's button accordion! Becca from the U.S. Forest Service - Salmon-Challis National Forest explored the world of birds with students. Kate read aloud to students who were impressed with how much Sacajawea did to help the Expedition, including caring for the members when they fell ill, teaching them to set traps and gather foraged foods, and saved the journals when their canoe tipped over - all with a baby on her back! Sarah's sunflower ball making station was a huge hit, and Meg led a station about traditional tools to navigate and make maps. Overall it was a big day full of engaging activities exploring our local natural and cultural resources and a lovely conclusion to Year 3 of Expedition in a Day!

Likely another familiar face to some of you - say hi to Joe Stewart, our new Natural Resource Specialist.
Joe hails from Seattle, Washington and loves adventuring outside, hiking, gardening, and befriending every dog he meets. He originally moved to Salmon after college and has spent time working in natural resources with the Bureau of Land Management, U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, and @lemhilandtrust. Most recently, Joe spent four years as a project manager with Trout Unlimited where he planned and implemented fish habitat rehabilitation projects throughout the Upper Salmon River Basin. When not exploring the beautiful areas around Salmon, Joe is a professional competitive bagpiper and spends time traveling to competitions throughout the U.S., Canada, and the U.K.

Students rotated through 8 different stations, ranging from learning about fire ecology and sagebrush ecosystems with Hannah from the BLM/Wildland Fire Service, pretending to be the annoying mosquitos and gnats that bothered Expedition members (and viewing Owen's awesome bug collection), and creating their own petroglyphs with Ranger Mark from Big Hole National Battlefield. Students also went on a nature hike with Lin from the Sawtooth Interpretive and Historical Association (SIHA), made sunflower balls and tasted pemmican with Sarah from SVS, and read It's Her Story: Sacajawea, written by Randy'L Teton. We were impressed with students' knowledge about the Lewis and Clark Expedition and their strong artistic and reading skills!

Shoutout to the parent, grandparent, and family chaperones who are supporting the teachers this week!

Meet our seasonal Ecological Monitoring Crew for 2026!
First up might be a familiar face to some of you here in Salmon. ‘Moose' Griswold moved to Salmon in 2023, and shortly thereafter accepted a position as manager of the @salmonschoolgarden. Prior to this, she was in Sandpoint for 9 years working on small-scale market vegetable farms. In 2020, Moose caught the “Botany Field Work Bug” where she worked as a field technician, assisting an University of Idaho Master’s student in creating a Floracopeia of the Selkirk Mountain Range. However, this is not where her love for plants started. She grew up in the Rocky Mountains of Colorado hiking extensively with her family. During these outings, her father, a geologist, shared his knowledge and love of the area's geology, but Moose always found herself chasing the wildflowers. While pursuing her studies in higher education in Cultural Anthropology, Moose soon discovered her passion for learning about the vast and amazing ways humans around the world have used plants through Ethnobotany and Medical Anthropology. This summer she is excited to deepen her knowledge and connection with the Salmon community and the surrounding area by working on the Ecological Monitoring Crew.

Yesterday Kate & Cameron traveled to Idaho Falls for the Idaho National Laboratory Community Open House. We were invited to attend because SVS was a recipient of INL's Community Grant last year, which boosted engagement at the Lemhi County Farmers Market through special events and helped us expand youth outdoor education opportunities. We enjoyed meeting Battelle Energy Alliance board members, Representative Rod Furniss, and learning about other regional organizations doing incredible community-centered work! Thank you to the INL engagement team for the invite!

It was an unforgettable and bird-brainy evening and we are so appreciative of all the support for this amazing community/educational resource. Project update: It's time to outfit the Community Kitchen with the many small yet essential supplies needed to open - now seeking donations of kitchen supplies and equipment.
What might you have that you'd like to donate? Please email Cameron at: cameronrolle@salmonvalley.org if you have something on our list or something high quality you think we could use.

Timeframe: Need items by April 30th
Wishlist: (We're only looking for kitchen items that are clean, high-quality, and suitable for a professional kitchen space - i.e. something you would expect to see in a restaurant or commercial kitchen)
- Wire rack shelving (sturdy, adjustable): 24" x 48" shelves preferred
- Pots, pans, cookware (stainless steel preferred)
- Kitchen utensils (stainless steel preferred, but need all sorts)
- Plastic cutting boards
- Food storage containers (cambros, catering pans, etc.)
- Small appliances (professional/commercial grade): food processor, immersion blender, and stand mixer are most needed

You've helped us get the kitchen trailer and walk-in cooler, shed, electricity, and more - now this is the fun part! With the addition of some kitchen wares, we can actually get cooking in the kitchen, and then be able to share this awesome resource. Project update: It's time to outfit the Community Kitchen with the many small yet essential supplies needed to open - now seeking donations of kitchen supplies and equipment.
What might you have that you'd like to donate? Please email Cameron at: cameronrolle@salmonvalley.org if you have something on our list or something high quality you think we could use.

Timeframe: Need items by April 30th
Wishlist: (We're only looking for kitchen items that are clean, high-quality, and suitable for a professional kitchen space - i.e. something you would expect to see in a restaurant or commercial kitchen)
- Wire rack shelving (sturdy, adjustable): 24" x 48" shelves preferred
- Pots, pans, cookware (stainless steel preferred)
- Kitchen utensils (stainless steel preferred, but need all sorts)
- Plastic cutting boards
- Food storage containers (cambros, catering pans, etc.)
- Small appliances (professional/commercial grade): food processor, immersion blender, and stand mixer are most needed

You've helped us get the kitchen trailer and walk-in cooler, shed, electricity, and more - now this is the fun part! With the addition of some kitchen wares, we can actually get cooking in the kitchen, and then be able to share this awesome resource. Bugs are important! Each year, in honor of National Agriculture Week, Lemhi County Extension organizes ag education for kids in Lemhi County. This year, SVS participated by coordinating the agriculture essay contest and teaching about insects in our agricultural system. We had so much fun teaching about the ways that insects help and hinder agriculture. We rely on insects for so many things - but seldom recognize their importance to our food system beyond pollination. Cameron, Meg, Kate, and Owen got outside with the Leadore K-4 classes and Sarah joined at the Outdoor Classroom with Pioneer 4th grade students the following day. We facilitated interactive activities like beneficial vs. pest tag and decomposer charades to share about beneficial insects and decomposition. Perhaps the best part was seeing Owen's huge bug collection, and some students even got to eat honey right off the honeycomb on a filled beehive frame. Thanks to UI Extension for leading Ag Week and to Leadore Elementary & Pioneer 4th grade teachers for working with us to bring agriculture into the (outdoor) classroom!

Last week marked the last day of work with SVS for Ari Pepper, Restoration Program Manager, after almost three years building the Native Plants and Restoration program. Hired in 2023, he hit the ground running to deliver work for the Forest Service's cooperative agreement with SVS to generate better native seed resources for local restoration. Ari's hardworking ethic and passion for native plant diversity were a perfect fit for this challenge, and he built the program into an impressively productive source of wild, genetically diverse native seed for the Salmon Valley. He also engaged dozens of local volunteers to build enthusiasm for this region's unique native plant communities. Working closely with Forest Service staff, he established a workshop where seed collections can be professionally cleaned and stored, a major asset to the future of the program. Over 100 species of native plants, mostly forbs (wildflowers) have passed through his hands, ending up in restoration sites, educational demonstrations, backyards, and research labs.

SVS and many partner staff are grateful for his efforts over the last few years. We wish him well as he starts as an Ecologist with the Institute for Applied Ecology in Santa Fe, New Mexico.

Come to our FREE workshops over the next 2 Saturdays. This Saturday's program is from 11 am to 1:30 pm at a local orchard. The event is free and lunch will be provided. They brought it to the Kitchen project site today and were greeted with a big round of applause from our staff. We're so grateful for our volunteer drivers and to the many others who've contributed to this project - it has been a real community effort to make the Community Kitchen a reality. We are so excited to learn the ins and outs of operating this beauty of a kitchen, and to get it and our walk-in cooler fully operational so we can open the space to rent out by the public.
