Do you want to see what gardening together is all about? Come help the folks who rent beds at the Community Garden at the Sacajawea Interpretive, Cultural & Educational Center! Save the date for a work party - we'll be playing some music and grooving out while also getting some gardening done. Thursday, July 24 @9:30 am for just a couple hours. Community gardeners and a couple of us from Salmon Valley Stewardship will be there - creating connections while we garden.

With grant funding from USDA we're purchasing a mobile kitchen trailer and walk-in cooler. This space will be open for rent to dedicated food businesses in the community who need commercial kitchen space. It's amazing to have the funding for the kitchen itself, but we need help raising funds for new electrical and plumbing connections, cooking equipment inside the kitchen, licensing, and to actually open this great resource this year.

Our aim with this project is to improve access to healthy local food, open new pathways for success for food and farming businesses, and strengthen food sovereignty in our rural community. Originally from Giltner, Nebraska, Diandra recently graduated with a B.S. in Environmental Science from Brown University with a background in botany, ecology, and fire ecology. She was recently awarded the Botanical Society of America's Young Botanist Award and the best STEM Thesis in Environmental Science in her graduating class. Last week was HOMEWATERS camp at the Sacajawea Center; a week full of fun, place-based learning focused on the wonder and importance of our watersheds and natural resources here in the Salmon Valley. Campers tied their own fly fishing flies and learned to cast them with Bill and Jeff, made reed mats, baskets, and beaded necklaces with Miss Bobette, dug in the stream for macroinvertebrates with Julianne, designed their own restoration sites, tested water quality with John, dissected fish with IDFG, learned all about salmon and their miraculous life cycles and habitat needs from Meg, and SO much more!

This camp is truly a community effort and could not happen without the expert planning and coordination of Suzy and Steph at the Sacajawea Center, the fundraising and volunteer time of the Trout Unlimited River of No Return Chapter, and the amazing generosity and passion of natural resource professionals and tribal members. THANK YOU to all who helped out and all the parents and campers that made the week great!

If you want to continue the Summer Camp fun think about signing your learner up for our upcoming outdoor learning summer camp at the school garden, Wednesdays in July! We will be partnering with the University of Idaho extension and exploring natural resource topics geared toward ages 6-12. A week and a half ago we hosted our third annual Bear Aware Community event in partnership with the U.S. Forest Service - Salmon-Challis National Forest, Bureau of Land Management - Idaho, Idaho Fish and Game (IDFG), and Backcountry Hunters & Anglers. IDFG staff from Island Park drove up to Salmon with their awesome bear education trailer, including a bear on tracks for folks to practice using bear spray! Hannah with the Salmon Field Office BLM shared information about whitebark pine & bear habitat, while Clay drove up from Challis & had resources for hunters and anglers to be bear aware while out recreating. The Forest Service had some Smokey swag and coloring books, while we had a variety of handouts for people to learn how to take preventative measures to reduce human-bear conflicts, free stickers, and a bear paw craft! A huge thank you to all of our partners for joining us for this event. Save the date for Wildlife Trivia on July 15th! Location TBD. 🐻

Hi Everyone! If you're interested in getting outside and helping us improve our local landscapes, we'd love for you to join us in collecting seed from one of our most charismatic wildflowers, Bitterroot!

We will be meeting at the SVS office @ 5:40pm this Wednesday evening and heading out to Discovery Hill at 6pm. We will have snacks and beverages but please bring anything you need to be comfortable for a short evening of field work. We look forward to working with you!

With funding support from National Environmental Education Foundation - NEEF this project involves gathering data about the Disco trails (grade, tread width, dishing, obstacles, etc) to develop signage in the future that would identify trail characteristics to aid in accessibility for all. We recruited 8th graders from FernWaters and high school students from Salmon High School to help us gather this data, using smart levels, tape measures, clinometers, tablets, and 100 ft ropes. Before going out in the field, students learned about accessibility needs when it comes to recreation, adaptive equipment, and practiced using the tools for field work. A huge thank you to all of our helpers, including teachers, staff from the BLM, Emma with the Salmon-Challis, and volunteer Bill Avey.

IDFG is hosting a virtual training webinar on May 28th, 2025 from 7:00-9:00 pm. A recording of the webinar will be available for viewing after. We plan to host an in-person training on June 13th. Our last Friday Natural Resource Program of the year was PECK-tacular. We got to learn about and observe many different feathery friends! Our good friend Tempe, the Idaho Department of Fish and Game regional wildlife biologist, shared her extensive knowledge of birds of prey with us. She even brought in feathers and birds for us to observe. Then we learned how to use binoculars and went birding, spotting over ten different species, including a juvenile bald eagle that swooped over our heads! At the park, we dissected owl pellets and went on a bird habitat scavenger hunt!

Details are still being finalized but we are hoping to have some supervised fun at the wave after the float, and lunch again in the park. Two weeks ago, Salmon Valley Stewardship and the Sacajawea Interpretive, Cultural & Educational Center hosted the 2nd annual “Expedition in a Day” field trip program with Pioneer Elementary. We welcomed Kindergarten through 5th grade classes to the Center each day to participate in a variety of stations on topics related to the Lewis and Clark Expedition, Agaidika culture, archaeology, and wildlife of the region. Depending on the grade level, students investigated animal tracks and scat around the Interpretive Center, explored a replica medicine chest modeled after the one Lewis and Clark carried on their journey, examined intricate Shoshone beadwork, climbed into a dugout canoe, or observed pileated woodpeckers on a nature walk. On Friday, we partnered with Lemhi Afterschool Promise for a special Friday program at the Center and then a community presentation with Leo Arriwite, Northern Shoshoni, from the Shoshone-Bannock Tribes. This year’s Expedition in a Day was supported by the Pioneer Elementary PTO who covered bus transportation costs, park rangers with the National Park Service’s Big Hole National Battlefield, Miss Erin with the Salmon Public Library, Sarah and Sarah with the Bureau of Land Management Salmon Field Office, Emma and Becca with the U.S. Forest Service - Salmon-Challis National Forest Partnership Office, Bobette and Russell Haskett of the Shoshone-Bannock Tribes, Leo Arriwite and family, and the Lewis & Clark Trails Alliance and their educators Laurie and Tom. Thank you to our incredible partners for helping us pull off another successful field trip program!

We all enjoyed experiencing Pat's Fire Rig and spraying the fire hose!

The Idaho State Envirothon, held in Challis, was a blast! This was the first time in over a decade Salmon has been represented at this unique natural resource competition, thanks to five super smart students who love to be outside!

The teams rotated through four field stations: soils and land use, forestry, aquatics, and wildlife. Natural Resource professionals at each station taught about their respective subject and then tested the students on their knowledge. Later in the evening they were given a current events presentation and a mock scenario/problem to solve. This year's theme was all about Forest Stewardship and making our forests more resilient for all who use and enjoy them. The students then had to organize their ideas and knowledge and present their solution scenario to a panel of judges. Scores from the field tests and presentations are then compiled and the winning team goes on to the international competition held this year in Alberta, Canada.

The Salmon Team won Rookie of the Year award, having learned a ton and coming away with a much better understanding of the competition. The Juniors on the team are excited to lead the way (to victory?) next year! Most importantly, we learned many new card games, laughed continuously for two days straight, and connected with each other and the land.

A week from today is our second-to-last Friday program of the spring - Join us to learn about fire on Friday April 11th! We'll explore the positive and negative impacts of fire on habitats and learn about jobs in wildland firefighting. Special guest is Pat with the U.S. Forest Service - Salmon-Challis National Forest. A week from today is our second-to-last Friday program of the spring - Join us to learn about fire on Friday April 11th! We'll explore the positive and negative impacts of fire on habitats and learn about jobs in wildland firefighting. Special guest is Pat with the U.S. Forest Service - Salmon-Challis National Forest. These programs are geared towards 2nd-6th graders, and run from 9 am to 12 pm. All supplies and snacks provided!

The field crew assists with landscape level restoration efforts through vegetation monitoring and revegetation of native plants. Hey Salmon Valley folks -- The @sacajaweacenter has lots of space available this year in the community garden. This is a great opportunity to be a part of a community of gardeners, have garden space and free irrigation, and access to tools and a compost pile. Cost is only $20 per bed per season (most beds are around 9ft x 3ft) and gardeners can set up an automatic watering timer, plant flowers, food, etc. and have a bounty of harvests throughout the season. There's even a small greenhouse you could set up for transplants this spring. Contact Suzy Avey at the Sacajawea Center to sign up or for more information. email: savey@sacajaweacenter.org
