🌱 More about milkweed: Milkweed is native perennial wildflower known for it’s unique flowers and white milky sap. It prefers consistently damp soils in our region, and it has "weed" in the name for a reason. Once established, it is hardy and can handle all kinds of conditions, and spreads by roots and airborne seeds. However, the monarch caterpillars that feed on it are sensitive to disturbance, chemicals and drought. Even chemicals that don’t harm the milkweed can damage feeding caterpillars. So, if you want your milkweed patch to help raise healthy monarchs, you must choose a place where these plants can thrive undisturbed, and as far as possible from herbicide or pesticide use.

If you want plants or seeds to plant on your own, email Owen Baughman, Restoration Program Coordinator, at owenbaughman@salmonvalley.org to coordinate drop-off/pickup. If you'd be interested in SVS staff planting them on your property for you, we can arrange that as well. They overwinter in huge butterfly colonies in Mexico and Southern California, then migrate north in spring over several generations. The Salmon Valley is near the northern end of their journey. The adult butterflies that hatch here in late summer must make an epic migration all the way to Southern California or Mexico before winter. Only the butterflies who were fat and happy during their caterpillar days on healthy milkweed patches have the best the chance of making it.

This week we have some fun STEM activities planned all about air and weather. These programs are geared towards kids ages 6-12. They are $20 per session with a scholarship option. This winter, Lemhi County residents have a new opportunity to enjoy local food through a CSA (Community Supported Agriculture) from Winter Kissed Farm in the Bitterroot Valley. CSA participants pay upfront and receive a biweekly box of fretsh, seasonal vegetables from October through April. The cost is $536.25 for the 13 box CSA share. Only 10 spots are available in this pilot program made possible by @oharacommons (O'Hara Commons and Sustainability Center)

The SVS Food Systems team held the third and final Seed School with @swiftriverfarmidaho this past Friday. Jessica and Jeremy of Swift River Farm went over the approaches to harvesting seed from a variety of crops including tomatoes, squash, peppers, carrots, onions, cucumbers and more. Participants gained great hands-on experience and were engaged in thoughtful discussions around growing for seed. The Seed School three-part workshop was supported through the Transition to Organics Partnership Program (TOPP). We have an incredible slate of TOPP workshops lined up for 2026, but before then, don't miss our next workshop on Saturday October 11th from 9 am - 12 pm at the @salmonschoolgarden all about low tunnels. As always, TOPP workshops are free to attend!

The SVS Food Systems team held the third and final Seed School with @swiftriverfarmidaho this past Friday. Jessica and Jeremy of Swift River Farm went over the approaches to harvesting seed from a variety of crops including tomatoes, squash, peppers, carrots, onions, cucumbers and more. Participants gained great hands-on experience and were engaged in thoughtful discussions around growing for seed. The Seed School three-part workshop was supported through the Transition to Organics Partnership Program (TOPP). We have an incredible slate of TOPP workshops lined up for 2026, but before then, don't miss our next workshop on Saturday October 11th from 9 am - 12 pm at the @salmonschoolgarden all about low tunnels. As always, TOPP workshops are free to attend!

We loved seeing the (literal truckloads) of apples and pears that people brought to be processed, and the last Farmers Market of the season was truly a super fun party. Bakers entered very creative apple pies and baked goods for the contest, and kids and adults alike enjoyed endless rounds of Tic-Tac-Toe and Tug of War. We had some mixed emotions from the vendors for the last day of the market - some said that they'll be happy to have their Saturdays free but will be sad to miss all the friends they see each weekend during market season. Hopefully this event will continue in future years to celebrate apple and harvest season!

Each year, Salmon Valley Stewardship solicits nominations for a community leader who elevates the economy, environment, and community in Lemhi County - the sustainability triple bottom line. Past and present board members of the River of No Return Chapter of TU joined SVS Executive Director Maggie Seaberg around the stage to receive this honor at Thursday evening's Harvest Fest event. The RNRTU chapter is dedicated to community driven restoration, youth education, and salmon recovery in the Columbia Basin. Their flagship project, Homewaters Youth Camp, developed and coordinated in partnership with the @sacajaweacenter, is evidence of their commitment to educating the next generation of stewards in protecting, reconnecting, restoring and sustaining our coldwater resources and sharing the recreational, cultural and economic values of sound water, land and fisheries management. Thank you for your contributions to our Salmon (& salmon!) community, River of No Return Trout Unlimited board members past and present!
